a weekend in the hamptons

a few weekends ago i headed out on a weekend excursion to the hamptons with one of my best friends, and i can now see why it is such a desirable area. it has all the charm of a small beach town, yet at the same time all the class and status of the upper east side. i loved the intimate and private feel of it— the way everyone seems to know each other and how towering hedges shield homes from prying eyes. unfortunately the weather was pretty damp and chilly for most of our stay there, but we didn't let that stop us from exploring east hampton and having a great time. we window-shopped downtown (if you're ever there, the lilly pulitzer store is a must— beautiful is the only word to describe it) and watched the great gatsby, which i thought was especially fitting given where we were. we made a lot of our own meals as well, including the "salad" above. i put salad in quotes because we basically chopped up everything we had in the fridge (apples, onions, chickpeas, grapes, tomatoes, broccoli, mushrooms...) and tossed the ingredients into a bowl with some mixed greens. somehow, it worked; in fact, it was actually one of the best salads i've ever had. another must in east hampton is mary's marvelous, a quaint bakery/cafĂ© that is known for its scrumptious muffins. we went for lunch one day, and while my sandwich was nothing life-changing, the assortment of mini muffins that i purchased were the just the way muffins should be: slightly firm on the edges with a soft center. the other pastries on display looked amazing as well although i didn't get to try them. something to look forward to the next time i go... on our last day there, the sun made a brief appearance, giving us enough time to talk a walk on the beach— the perfect way to end a relaxing weekend.
